Assessment of WASH scenarios in urban and rural schools of a small city in the Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
BORGES-PEDRO,João Paulo; MÜLLER,Patricia; NUNES,Andreza Pinheiro; GOMES,Maria Cecilia R. L..
ABSTRACT This study analyzed environmental aspects of county and state managed public schools within Tefé county in the Brazilian Amazon, using the WASH concept (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) developed by UNICEF and OMS. WASH is a strategy used since 1995, when child mortality rates were on the rise. Research was conducted using a questionnaire applied to employees of 19 primary and secondary schools, and based on WASH principles. After its application, we used an observation checklist to assess the state of the schools’ physical structure. We also conducted water quality analyses. All schools presented water contamination with total coliforms and 26% did not conduct any type of water treatment. The number of toilets in all schools was insufficient, and...

Detection methods for cleanness in cattle barns CIGR Journal
Kymäläinen, Hanna-Riitta; Kuisma, Risto.
The suitability of microbiological dipslides and tests of general hygiene for examining cleanability of steel structures for use in cattle barns was investigated in a laboratory study. Steel is a commonly used material in barn equipment such as milk tanks and sinks. The cleanness of the steel was examined after soiling with seven typical cattle barn soils (four feeds, litter, manure and milk) and after cleaning with different detection methods including various microbiological dipslide types, protein tests, a glucose and lactose test and an ATP (adenosine triphosphate) bioluminescence method. The results were collected in a database and ranked into cleanliness classes. On surfaces, microbes were detected in the case of all other soils than milk, whereas...

Hygiene of environmental surfaces in a cattle barn CIGR Journal
Kymäläinen, Hanna-Riitta; Kuisma, Risto.
Microbiological dipslides are widely used e.g. in food production facilities for HACCP (hazard analysis & critical control points) measurements and hygiene monitoring surveys, as well as for other cleanability studies.  In this study the suitability of microbiological dipslide methods to measure the hygiene level of the environmental surfaces in a cattle barn was tested.  A total of 1112 measurements were carried out during five measurement days.  When evaluating the rooms by combining the results of the individual sampling sites and different dipslide types (total microbes, enterobacteria and β-glucuronidase-positive organisms, yeasts and moulds), the corridor and personnel rooms had the highest hygiene status.  The office and personnel kitchen and...

Microbiological counting in lamb carcasses from an abattoir in São Paulo, Brazil Ciência Rural
Martineli,Thaís Mioto; Rossi Junior,Oswaldo Durival; Cereser,Natacha Deboni; Cardozo,Marita Vedovelli; Fontoura,Cristianne Lino; Perri,Silvia Helena Venturoli.
The consumption of lamb meat in Brazil has increased in the last years but little information about the microbiological quality of this product is available. To evaluate the hygienic-sanitary conditions of lamb carcasses, the quantification of microorganism populations indicators (mesophiles and psychrotrophs; total and thermotolerant coliforms; Escherichia coli; moulds and yeasts) and the pathogenic microorganisms indentification (Salmonella sp. and Listeria spp.) were performed. A total of 60 lamb carcasses were sampled from one abattoir in São Paulo. Swab samples were collected from three points (forequarter, back and hindquarter) on the muscle surface after carcasses final washing. Statistical analysis consisted of descriptive evaluation of the results...

Recommendations for hygiene of masks and circuits in mechanically home ventilated patients BJID
Toussaint,Michel; Reychler,Gregory.
Home mechanical ventilation requires equipment, consisting of a generator of pressure, a tubing and an interface to deliver air to the patient. Instructions for equipment maintenance are generally not based on scientific evidence. Studies however have reported that tubing and masks used at home are the most commonly found as very dirty and contaminated. Dirtiness and contamination of equipment potentially expose patients to a higher risk of airway colonization, which, in turn, should cause respiratory infections. For this reason, published hygiene instructions include the use of disinfectant solution. Nevertheless, they generally fail to explain how basic maintenance may be achieved by simple cleaning with soap and water. The instructions for post-cleaning...

Self-Monitoring Microbiological Criteria for the Assessment of Hygienic Procedures During Chicken Slaughtering Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Dias,MR; Dianin,KCS; Bersot,LS; Nero,LA.
ABSTRACT Self-monitoring procedures are adopted by food industries to ensure the quality and safety of final products, considering hygiene and processing criteria. This study aimed to evaluate contamination in chicken processing, considering the microbiological criteria proposed by self-monitoring systems. Environmental samples from reception, slaughtering and processing were collected from three chicken slaughterhouses (Sl1, Sl2, Sl3), and subjected to microbiological analysis to enumerate hygiene indicators microorganisms: mesophilic aerobes, enterobacteriaceae, coliforms and Escherichia coli. The obtained counts were converted to log10, compared by ANOVA (p<0.05) and self-monitoring microbiological criteria for each slaughterhouse were considered. In...

The effects of job site sanitation and living conditions on the health and welfare of agricultural workers AgEcon
Frisvold, George B.; Mines, Richard; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
The lack of field toilets on agricultural job sites increases the probability of gastrointestinal disorders by 60%. Adverse living conditions significantly increase the probability of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and muscular problems. These three health problems do not appear to increase the probability that a worker's family is on welfare or lower workers' earnings. Respiratory problems, however, substantially increase the probability that the worker receives unemployment compensation.
